Packers 2012 NFL Draft – Fourth Round Pick: Jerron McMillian, S Maine

With their fourth round pick (133rd overall) in the 2012 NFL draft, the Green Bay Packers selected Jerron McMillian, a safety from Maine. The Packers had McMillian in for a pre-draft visit.

PLAYER DETAILS:
Jerron McMillian
Strong Safety
University of Maine Black Bears
5’11″ 203lbs

CAREER NOTES:

From JSOnline:

McMillian was an all-conference selection who had  92 tackles, including 10.5 for loss. He had one interception.

AGILITY TESTS:
4.22 in the 20 yard shuttle…6.69 in the 3 cone drill…4.42 in the 40 yard dash…17 reps on bench press…120″ broad jump…36.5″ vertical

SCOUTING REPORT:
From NFL.com:

STRENGTHS: McMillian brings a physical presence to the back end of the defense, reacts to passes well and can force his body hard in one direction to make a play toward the ball, much like he does in his reactions to the run. He is quick to diagnose run and pass, and reacts to the run much better coming toward the line of scrimmage than he does moving away. McMillian is NFL-ready in supporting the run.

WEAKNESSES: McMillian can struggle in some of his transitional movements when playing the pass. He looks to support the run first and this can get him to bite at times.

From JSOnline:

The 5-11, 203-pound McMillian ran the 40-yard dash in an impressive 4.56 seconds at the scouting combine and had the third best vertical leap of any strong safety at 36 inches. He was second worst among his peers in the bench press at 17 reps at 225 pounds.

COMMENTARY:

Ted Thompson continues to focus on defense and grabs a safety. With Nick Collins out of Green Bay, the Packers need to find a safety to pair with Morgan Burnett and McMillian will have a chance to be that guy.

So he can only lift James Starks 17 consecutive times while laying on his back! Well, I guess that will have to be good enough.

After the first 3 rounds, every pick is camp competition.

I’m beginning to come around on this draft. It’ll have an immediate impact on the pass rush, which will make the D much better.

If anything, it’ll push guys like Wynn, Wilson, Neal, House, Shields, MD Jennings, Levine, and the OLBs to step up their game.

    • Couldn’t agree more. Training camp should be filled with some intense battles for roster spots and playing time.

Camp will be very interesting. I think the old rule “your job is on the line” for everyone will be in play. That includes all the DL, LB’s and DB’s. Even Mr Woodson will be inspired this summer.

Notice the picks are bringing viscious hard hitters! Giving some guys an opportunity of a lifetime.

Go ARod get us 21 Plus points in the 4th. You will have a “D” to stop the other guys now.

To me, it’s clear that TT sent a message to the defensive players. Maybe management thought complacency was a big reason for what happened to the D last year.

    • Ron LC says:

Competition will inspire some of those who were uninterested in improving skills, like tackling for example,to come into camp with a chip of their shoulder. If nothing else this draft is showing the team that TT and MM were not happy with the 2011 defense. They will fix it, or the price will be high.

I love this draft. The D WILL be better! The rest of the NFL will take notice and the Pack will make a strong run at another ring!
