Packers President Mark Murphy: Could He Be Leaving for Stanford?
Mark Murphy, current President and CEO of the Green Bay Packers, is reportedly interested in the Athletic Director job at the University of Stanford. The San Francisco Chronicle was the first to break the possibility of Murphy leaving Green Bay.
The job as the AD of Stanford became available when previous AD Bob Bowlsby took a job as commissioner of the Big 12. Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press Gazette reported today that Murphy tried to get the Stanford athletic director job in 2006, but Bowlsby got the job.
While the idea of leaving one of the most successful franchises in the NFL for a college may seem like a step down, Murphy has a long and rich history with the college game.
The bigger question that needs to be answered is what is happening with the Packers’ front office?
With so many coaches and staff leaving this offseason (i.e. Joe Philbin, Reggie McKenzie, etc.), losing Murphy could be another tumultuous hit to Green Bay. It’s understandable that other teams or schools want to hire successful people, but at what point do the Packers need to pony-up some dough to keep these guys around?
Will Green Bay suffer in 2012 from these losses? Maybe, maybe not, but it certainly is much harder to bring in a new coach or a new CEO than it is to keep one that has been there for years.
Hopefully this is all just the work of rumors and nothing comes from it, but just in case, Green Bay might want to start lining up some other options.
Any volunteers?

I would be interested how Packer fans view Murphy. He certainly isn’t as popular as Harlen, but I wonder if the fan base has gotten used to him and would prefer him to stay. Or do they not know enough about what he’s done and could care less. I do believe he is well regarded in NFL circles.

To answer your question, Mojo, he has been a good football man while being able to work with and lead the volitle Exec. Committee. In my opinion, the later is the most important qualification any Packer Prez must possess. When GB has problems the damn Exec Committee is geting involved in day-to-day decision making. That’s a bad thng. Murphy has done a stellar job in that area.
I’d like to see him stay. Seeing him on the tailgate bus tours shows the dedication he has to doing that critical PR job in Wisconsin and throughout the Packer world.

I got to meet him at the Packers-Giants pep rally last year. Seems like a very sincere and dedicated guy. I think he’s done a really good job overseeing the business side of the operation.

So what is the problem with getting it straight from the horse’s mouth? Why doesn’t somebody ask Murphy? We see all these headlines with the big question marks behind them, and then we proceed to read the gossip, and we draw our own conclusions.
I for one never saw enough of the guy to gather an opinion so I don’t know whether his leaving would be good or bad, but as long as Bob Harlan is alive we’ll be OK.

” It’s understandable that other teams or schools want to hire successful people, but at what point do the Packers need to pony-up some dough to keep these guys around?”
You specifically mention Joe Philbin and Reggie McKenzie(..and you can throw John Schneider in there, too.) These guys are taking promotions- taking their dream jobs- they’re not just taking raises.
Assistant Coaches want to be Head Coaches. Scouts/personnel men want to be GMs some day..
These particular loses aren’t about the Packers being chintzy with their paychecks. Actually, Packers staff get paid pretty darn competitively. Theses changes are about opportunity.

I have met him before and the times I have he has always seemed interested in hearing fan opinions about anything packers. I think he is an excellent and accessible president for the team. He would be great for Stanford as well. Though based on facts in the article this seems a stretch. I doesn’t seem like he has said any thing about this. Or am I wrong on that?
