Report: Packers Releasing Graham Harrell

Adam Schefter of ESPN’s NFL Insider reported this afternoon via Twitter that the Green Bay Packers are releasing quarterback Graham Harrell:

The news comes less than 24 hours after a forgettable performance by Harrell in the Packers-Seahawks preseason game, where he completed 6 of 13 passes for 49 yards and a quarterback rating of 56.2. Overall during the 2013 preseason, Harrell has completed 23 of 42 passes for 169 yards and an interception. He failed to score a touchdown in any game, though Finley’s attempt to haul in an endzone pass might have been as close as it came. The initial touchdown call was eventually overturned on review.

Harrell was signed by the Packers in May 2010 after playing with the Canadian Football League and has been with the team since.

This news suggests that the Packers will be running with veteran QB Vince Young as the back-up to Aaron Rodgers. After being signed by Green Bay early in training camp, Young has slowly progressed within Mike McCarthy’s offensive system. He had his best night against Seattle, when he complete 6 of 7 passes for 41 yards and a touchdown. Young also added 39 yards on 3 scrambles, which was the highest rushing total by any player that game.

By the end of business on Tuesday, August 27th, all NFL teams must have their rosters cut down to 75 players. The final cutdowns to the 53-man roster must occur by Saturday, August 31st. This marks the first of numerous cuts to be announced by the Packers over the next week.

WOW! Too bad for Harell. You feel for the the guy. But this is a performance based biz. He hasn’t done it.

Now about that Mason Crosby guy..

You hate to see a guy get cut (and what are the chances he catches on anywhere else?), but even more: I didn’t like the idea of the team falling into Harrell’s hands if AR got hurt.

LMAO… Carpender just had a 25 yd FG blocked for the Cards. Yeah I can see why he’s such a better kicker than Crosby. Nothing wrong w/ the snap or hold, he simply didn’t get enough air on the kick. And when your 25 yds away that’s the ONLY thing you have to do is get it up.

I sure not sold on Vince Young as a backup. But I’ve been sold on “not Graham Harrell” for a good long time now.

By the end of Harrell’s time in the game yesterday, the Seahawks were pressing everything short because they knew Harrell wasn’t going downfield at all. An offense can’t function like that. Plus, Harrell has all too often violated the Cardinal Rule of QB Play: Thou shalt not turn over the ball.

I honestly think the Packers improved a little over last year today.

It was pretty evident the Seahwaks had no fear/respect for Harrell when Lacy couldn’t get to the line of scrimmage. They were crashing the line with no fear of Harrell’s arm beating them even for one play. I can’t understand why it took this long.

Young isn’t the prototypical Packers QB, but he’s been a winner at every level and by most accounts is a leader. I’ll take that leadership and his feet over Harrell (lack of) arm! Hallelujah that I don’t have to force myself to try to like Harrell. Good riddance Harrell!

I don’t want to be a dick because this is a man’s life and livelihood were talking about here but I honestly think the trip/fumble last year was enough to warrant his release after last season.

To make the roster you have to either be either very reliable (minimal mistakes) or have big upside. GH had neither. Crosby still is hanging on because of his believed upside with big leg. If GT can actually kick it into the endzone, Crosby would be long gone. Ross should be gone but no one else can do returns and Ross has big upside with is size and athleticism so he’s also hanging on. The last PS game is about sorting between Franklin, Green, Ross, Johnson, and Dorsey. I think Walker made it. He’s too reliable to let go. On the DB side, I think Hyde and Banjo are in. They are both very reliable tacklers and can somewhat keep up as backup DB’s.

I think that the Packers realize that their line can’t really block so they really need a mobile QB. GH is definitely not. VY is.
