Green Bay Packers vs. Philadelphia Eagles:  2013 Game 9

Unfiltered game day blog post of comments, observations and first impressions.

GAME NOTES:

There’s really only one thing that matters in this game – can the Packers find a way to win games with Seneca Wallace in place of Aaron Rodgers?

Clay Matthews hurries back to try to give the defense and the Packers an emotional boost. His OLB bookend, Nick Perry also makes it back this week.

Nick Foles threw seven touchdown passes last week. He did a great job of going through his progressions because he had time to. Packers can’t allow that to happen this week.

Tonight’s captains for the Packers: - David Bakhtiari, Brad Jones, Chris Banjo

Inactives for today:

Mike McCarthy Pregame Show on 620 WTMJ:

Panic when Rodgers went down?:  You really don’t have time for that. He told me on the sidelines they just want to take a picture. It happened at end of series, so the transition was as smooth as it can possibly be. You have a chance to warm your backup QB up and get him in there to start the next series.

Adjustments when Rodgers went down: Last week was particularly tough because of where we are as an offense with Aaron Rodgers and the responsibility we put on to our quarterback. Ad dto that our injuries on the perimeter – it was a big adjustment. With a week of preparation, we’ll be much more ready today.

Eagles uptempo offense:  -  It’s a challenge. I thought our opponents team did am great job replicating it this week in practice. Just have to make sure you have the right defensive sets and not get caught by surprise.

Nick Foles: H can really throw – has always been impressive. Our defense has a big challenge – More importantly we have to go attack them.

Packers vs. Vikings – Game Day First Impressions, Unfiltered: GB 44 MIN 31

Green Bay Packers vs. Minnesota Vikings:  2013 Game 7

Unfiltered game day blog post of comments, observations and first impressions.

GAME NOTES:

The 1-5 Vikings host the 4-2 Packers in the teams’ first meeting of the season. Though the Packers have rebounded from a slow start and fight through a number of injuries to key starters, the Vikings just seem to be in shambles. Christian Ponder will start today after recently-signed Josh Freeman took the nod last week. Greg Jennings will want to light up his former team, especially after all of the controversial sound bites, and Adrian Peterson will want to get back to form after rushing for a total of only 90 yards across the past two games. On the other side of the ball, James Starks is back to possible spell Eddie Lacy in the ground game, while the Packers defense looks to maintain their dominance at the line.

Today’s captains for the Packers: - C/G Evan Dietrich-Smith, DT Johnny Jolly, K Mason Crosby.

Inactives for today:

Recent success in Metrodome: Communication, verbal and visual. Have to be able to overcome it, especially in big situations.

Rivalries for fans vs. players: Players and coaches still feel rivalry. Not beneficial to get involved in emotions of it. Need to play emotionally, mentally disciplined.

Finley’s health: He’s getting better. Testing is still going on. No timetable at this point.

Bush, Hayward returning: Always want them involved on special teams. How Vikings play will determine Hayward’s participation.

James Starks returning: Would like to get him involved tonight.

Green Bay Packers vs. Cleveland Browns:  2013 Game 6

Unfiltered game day blog post of comments, observations and first impressions.

GAME NOTES:

The walking wounded (otherwise known as your Green Bay Packers) hit the field today in their Throwback uniforms to take on the improving Browns. Cleveland has  a very good unit on defense, but the offense has struggled since Brian Hoyer went down and Brian Weeden stepped in at quarterback.

Packers wide receiving corps will consist of Jordy Nelson, Jarret Boykin and Myles White, fresh off the practice squad.

Today’s captains for the Packers: - OL Josh Sitton, DB M.D. Jennings, LB AJ Hawk.

Inactives for today:

90 DL Billy Winn

The Browns have only 52 players on their active roster, therefore they have only six inactives.

Mike McCarthy Pregame Show on 620 WTMJ:

Keep calm and carry on: Inspiration comes from my wife – has great appreciation for history. Really helps me on a personal level when the kids are being rambunctious. Very appropriate this week for our game against the Browns.

NFL requirement to dress 46: We will dress all 46. there will be a player or two on there we’d rather not play – not going to say who.

Question marks: Hayward not going to play he’s inactive.  Mike Neal is active and ready to go.

Linebackers: Malumba and Palmer have had a full week of practice. First time we’ve had all 7 DL up. Excited for Josh Boyd, he’s been working hard in practice – deserves this chance.

Receivers/TEs:  White, Stoneburner – they’re going to have opportunities to play today. I just want them to not overthink and just go out there and play football.

Green Bay Packers vs. Baltimore Ravens:  2013 Game 5

Unfiltered game day blog post of comments, observations and first impressions.

GAME NOTES:

The Packers haven’t won a road game since December 2012 at Chicago.  While this isn’t the same Ravens team that won a Super Bowl back in February, they are still tough at home and are unbeaten in two games there this season.

The last time the Packers were at M&T Bank Stadium was in 2005 on Monday Night Football.  The Ravens stomped Green Bay 48-3 and it was one of the top five worst losses in Packers history.  It was quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ rookie season and he came in to relieve Brett Favre.  Rodgers threw an interception of his own in the losing effort.

The Packers won the last matchup in 2009 at Lambeau Field, also a Monday Nighter, forcing three Joe Flacco interceptions.  It was one of Flacco’s worst career games, as he posted a quarterback rating of just 27.2.

Ravens LT Eugene Monroe will make his Ravens debut since being traded from the Jacksonville Jaguars.  Monroe replaces incumbent Bryant McKinnie, who is inactive today.

Today’s captains for the Packers: - OG T.J. Lang (offense), S Morgan Burnett (defense) and WR Jarrett Boykin (special teams).

Inactives for today:

59 LB Brad Jones
64 G/C Greg Van Roten

62 NT Terrence Cody
76 G/T Jah Reid
77 C Ryan Jensen
78 T Bryant McKinnie
80 WR Brandon Stokley
94 OLB John Simon

Mike McCarthy Pregame Show on 620 WTMJ:

Weather today:  May rain.  Need to be aware of it, especially wind.  Practice wet ball security during the week.

Adjusting without Matthews and B. Jones: A lot of moving parts with guys out.  Perry will move to the right side with Neal on the left at OLB.  Jamari Lattimore is ready to go.  It’s an opportunity.  Has done a great job on special teams.

Run game: Run game is a work in progress.  Good job up front.  Making good adjustments and communication is good.  Running backs have picked it up.  Doing it with different runners.

Green Bay Packers vs. Detroit Lions:  2013 Game 4

Unfiltered game day blog post of comments, observations and first impressions.

GAME NOTES:

The Packers have have had two weeks to stew and get sick of answering questions about play-calling,  injuries, MM-AR relationship and more. They can take the field today and make all of that go away by playing like the better team.

Some great injury news. Morgan Burnett and Clay Matthews are in, Calvin Johnson is out!

Mike McCarthy Pregame Show on 620 WTMJ:

Bye Week: Pretty much everybody that went into the bye week injured came back, with exception of Casey Hayward.   Our best week of practice.

Work during Bye Week: because of the rules, there isn’t much you can do with the players, so for them, it’s more a chance to go back home, spend time with family, etc. Gives us as a chance on the coaching staff to get ahead of the curve,

Burnett: Every unit has a key communicator. Morgan is the guy to make sure the front end is tied to the back end.  Safety position is like playing QB in a multi-scheme defense like ours.

Calvin Johnson: Big loss. He’someone you’re aware of in every formation. Thought they were doing a great job of playing him out of the slot position.

Reggie Bush: He’s a play maker running and catching the football. Perimeter screens, middle screens, they’re doing a great job with him. Stafford and Bush really compliment each other.

Stafford: Look at his numbers. People tend to overlook him a little. Schematically, he challenges defenses as much as anybody. Very well coached.

GAME NOTES:

For the second straight week, the Packers are facing an opponent coming off a Monday Night game. Always an advantage to some degree.

Two Bengals cornerbacks are out today, though neither are major contributors. Still, Aaron Rodgers is presently wiping the saliva off his chin… Pacman Jones, are you ready?

Today’s captains for the Packers: - WR Jordy Nelson (offense), CB Sam Shields (defense) and TE Ryan Taylor(special teams).

Mike McCarthy Pregame Show on 620 WTMJ:

Tough stretch: Definitley. You’re going to find out what kind of team you have early on.

Progress in week 2: Main thing was the start of the game, how we came out and played from the first snap.

Starks as starter:  James has played good football for us in the past. He’s been fighting through the competition at running back and has  done well.

Lacy/Kuhn: Both will not be available today.

Diff. protection schemes on 3rd down: Well, we’re going to play with John Starks and Johnathan Franklin.

Bengals: Very good at creating matchups they like. Frankly what they try to do is stress the middle of your pass defense and create the opportunities for AJ Green outside.

Improvement on defense: Absolutely. Washington didn’t convert a third down until the third quarter.  Pass defense when you HAVE to stop them, that’s something we have to do a better job of.

Trenches: Very talented on both sides of the ball upfront. They go 7-8 deep on the defensive line.  Offensive line are big. They’ve gone more to pattern schemes.
