Hmmmmm, how many wide receivers can I find?

Here is the complete list of the Packers’2012 UDFA (undrafted free agent) signings, complete with rankings, height, weight and 40 yard dash times. We will be continually updating the list with additional player information or adding new signings, so check back in throughout the day.

Dale Moss, WR, South Dakota St – 6’3″ 220lbs, 4.39 40yd dash time -

Was the 30th ranked wide receiver with a “preferred free agent” grade by NFL Scouting.  At his Pro day, also had a 41.5 inch vertical, had a 10’10 broad jump. In 2011, caught 61 passes for 949 yards and 6 TDs in 10 games.

Darius Reynolds, WR, Iowa State – 6’0″ 209lbs, 4.54 40yd dash time -

Was the 79th ranked wide receiver with a “camp invitee” grade by NFL Scouting. In 2011, caught 43 passes for 695 yards and 7 TDs in 11 games.

Marcus Rivers, WR, Buffalo – 6’0″ 212lbs, 4.61 40yd dash time -

2012 NFL Draft

As the 2012 NFL Draft is about to begin, here are some things that have been whispered into my ear as well as some of my own opinions and predictions.  Read more... (367 words + 1 image, estimated 1:28 mins reading time)

1. Whisper: The Packers love Shea McClellin, but so do the Patriots, who pick just before them. If Ted HAS to have him, he’ll need to trade up in front of NE (unless Mercilus is there for New England, who is their first choice)
2. Prediction: There will be no Ted Thompson head-scratchers on the first 2 days of the draft. The Packers are still burning from a 15-1 season and first round playoff loss. They have virtually the same team coming back. Ted knows if he can plug a few holes with immediate help, success will follow.
3. Whisper: The Packers also love Casey Hayward in the second, but will have competition from the 49ers.
4. Opinion: The only four positions I would draft an offensive player at are center, tackle, quarterback and running back.
5. Whisper: The Packers are seriously considering some linebackers that are thought to be more suited as 4-3 LBs, but who they consider to be  ”moldable.”

Everyone take a deep breath and relax.

The Packers have announced that they have re-signed outside linebacker Erik Walden; details of the contract were not made available (which is a statement in itself), but considering the lack of interest Walden received during free agency and the fact that the signing is a mere 3 days before the NFL draft indicates that Walden was desperate to sign and probably took a 1 year minimum contract.

Walden was viewed as a potential starter after an impressive 2010 campaign, but literally saw the 2011 season fall apart as he started 15 games but ended up as a liability on defense, was replaced by Brad Jones during the playoffs and was the center of an ugly domestic violence dispute with his girlfriend that resulted in him having to spend Thanksgiving in jail.  Read more... Was 2009 the best draft year for Ted Thompson?

With the 2012 NFL Draft just days away, I thought it might be interesting to rank Ted Thompson’s previous drafts as General Manager of the Green Bay Packers.

This activity will incorporate his first draft in 2005 through the 2009 draft. The 2010 and 2011 years will be omitted based on the reasoning that the players from those drafts are too young in their careers to accurately gauge. (But feel free to leave a comment on how you’d rank them if they were included.)

1. How much have the players in a specific draft contributed to the success of the Green Bay Packers?
2. Secondary to the first criterion is how well has the player has succeeded in the NFL overall.
3. How many “busts” did a specific draft include?
4. How much value did Thompson get with each selection based on overall pick number and the player’s future performance?

Al: It was a quiet week for Packers news, but some Packers players are slowly making their way back into Green Bay this week, as the team’s offseason conditioning program is set to begin on Monday. There will be two weeks of strictly conditioning work followed by 3 weeks of conditioning and individual instruction with position coaches. One of the players already in Green Bay is M.D. Jennings, the Packers backup safety who said he spoke with Nick Collins last week.

Jayme: With regards to Collins, Jennings echoed what others have said, that Collins says he feels great and really wants to resume his playing career. Assuming his doctors give him the OK, he’ll still have to convince the Packers medical staff and coaches to let him back on the field.  Read more... Defensive Backs Charles Woodson, Nick Collins, Charlie Peprah

Packers Defensive Backs: We’re back with the third of this series where we examine each Packers position group as it currently exists. Today we finish the defensive side of the ball by examining the Packers’ secondary. As before, this article will examine three main points from the Packers’ perspective: where we are, where we want to go and what we need to do to get there.

While this position group has six undrafted players, only three are regulars and overall there is better representation near the top of the draft than in the defensive line and linebacker groups.
