Packers QB Aaron Rodgers and CB Charles Woodson Named to AP All-Pro Team

Charles Woodson was named to his sixth AP All-Pro team on Friday.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been named to the Associated Press 2011 NFL All-Pro Team after receiving 47.5 of the 50 total votes, the AP announced Friday. Rodgers was joined on the team by Packers cornerback Charles Woodson.

Rodgers threw for a franchise-record 4,643 yards and 45 touchdowns in leading the Packers to a 15-1 regular season record and the NFC’s No.1 seed. He also set the NFL record for passer rating in a season with a 122.5 mark, eclipsing Peyton Manning’s mark of 121.1 set in 2004.

2011 will be the first season in which Rodgers has earned All-Pro honors.

Drew Brees, the New Orleans Saints record-breaking quarterback, received the other 2.5 votes. The wide discrepancy in votes almost ensures that Rodgers will also be the NFL’s MVP, which is scheduled to be announced in February on the night before the Super Bowl.

Woodson earned his sixth AP All-Pro selection of his career (1999, 2000, ’08, ’09, ’10, ’11) despite the Packers allowing the most passing yards in NFL history this season. The 35-year-old Woodson was tied for the NFL lead in interception in 2011 with seven, marking the second time in his career that he’s either led or tied in interceptions for a season. He also had two sacks and forced and recovered a fumble.

Packers vs. Lions: 5 Observations from Green Bay’s 45-41 Win over Detroit

Packers QB Matt Flynn broke several franchise records Sunday. (Photo: Tom Lynn, JSOnline)

Backup quarterback Matt Flynn threw six touchdowns in relief of a deactivated Aaron Rodgers Sunday, leading the Green Bay Packers to a 45-41 shootout win over the Detroit Lions in Week 17 at Lambeau Field.

Here are five observations from the Packers’ win:

1. Cha-Ching

In throwing for a Packers’ record in both passing yards (480) and touchdowns (six), Matt Flynn vaulted himself to the top of the 2012 free agent quarterback class. He’ll become a rich man sometime this summer, as there will likely be at least one quarterback-needy team that pays big money to Flynn despite only two NFL starts.

Any chance of the Packers trying to re-sign as a backup him went out the window Sunday. He’s ready to start, and that’s not happening in Green Bay. It’ll be interesting to see how the Packers approach the impending situation this offseason, however. They could choose to let Flynn walk and simply net the compensatory pick in next year’s draft. Or, they could franchise tag him and then pursue a trade, which gives them control over the compensation and location. I don’t think any team in the division is a threat to sign Flynn, but the Packers’ decision regarding their backup quarterback is definitely something to watch after this season.

Green Bay Packers vs. Detroit Lions:

Here is my unfiltered game day blog post of comments, observations and first impressions.

In a game that means absolutely nothing to the Packers, Mike McCarthy resists temptation and plants Aaron Rodgers firmly on the sideline in street clothes. Hooray is all I can say. It’s a move that surprises and impresses me. Mike Mccarthy, you’ve come a long way, baby.

Inactive for the Packers today are:

Aaron Rodgers, Charles Woodson, Clay Matthews, Greg Jennings, Randall Cobb, Bryan Bulaga, James Starks

Wow. I’d love to take this group and go 7 vs. 7 in the parking lot against ANYONE.

Sounds like Jones and Zombo are getting starts at OLB today, and we’ll be sure to see plenty of Vic So’oto as well.

Packers vs. Lions Preview: 5 Things to Watch

Packers QB Matt Flynn has a perfect stage in Week 17 for his looming free agent status.

The Green Bay Packers (14-1) and Detroit Lions (10-5) face off in Week 17 of the NFL season Sunday.

The basics

When: 12:00 CST, Sunday, January 1, 2012.

Where: Lambeau Field, Green Bay, WI.

TV: FOX; Thom Brennaman and Brian Billick with the call, Laura Okmin on the sidelines.

Radio: 620 AM WTMJ (Milwaukee); Packers Radio Network; NFL Sunday Drive.

Series: Packers lead, 92-65-7 (Packers won last regular season game, 27-17, on Nov. 24, 2011 at Ford Field.)

Five things to watch

1. Money to be made

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Friday that he wants all three quarterbacks to play on Sunday, but the middle man in the group has a golden opportunity to bump up his price tag this summer. Matt Flynn, the Packers backup quarterback and a free agent after the season, will likely see the majority of the snaps against the Lions. Another solid performance on the big stage may propel a quarterback-needy team to give Flynn the opportunity to start for their franchise—and the money that goes with it—next season.

2. Who needs receivers?

What I Want and Don’t Want to see in Packers Season Finale Against The Lions

Charles Woodson

Charles Woodson needs to sit on the bench next to Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews on Sunday.

When did it become the norm in America to shop before, during and after the holidays? When I was a kid, my parents sneaked away after work on a random night in early December to buy my Christmas presents (my favorites were games for my Sega Master System or WWF wrestler figurines).

They didn’t wake up at 3 a.m. to wait in line at some store on Black Friday. They didn’t buy additional crap on Cyber Monday. And they didn’t use the Holidays as an excuse to buy a bunch of stuff for themselves on the day after Christmas.

Speaking of the day after Christmas, I never once rushed to a nearby store to exchange one of my presents. If I got a Ricky Steamboat wrestling figure, then by God, that’s the wrestling figure I played with until my birthday came around.

Shopping for kids these days isn’t what it used to be. It’s hard. I don’t envy parents one bit. If I ever become a parent, I’m going to ask my kid to make me a list of things he doesn’t want in addition to the things he wants. I guarantee you the don’t want list will be longer than the want list.

Packers vs. Bears: 5 Observations from Green Bay’s 35-21 Win over Chicago

Behind five touchdown passes from Aaron Rodgers, the Green Bay Packers wrapped up home field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs and won a franchise record 14th game in 2011 with a 35-21 victory over the Chicago Bears.

Five observations from the game:

1. Next man up

The Packers makeshift offensive line bounced back in a big way Sunday night. Facing one of the better defensive lines in football, Rodgers wasn’t sacked and rarely was hurried. The banner performance came from left tackle Marshall Newhouse, who all but took All-Pro defensive end Julius Peppers out of the game. This was a big time performance with just two players, Scott Wells at center and Josh Sitton at right guard, starting at the same position they did to begin the 2011 season.

2. Missing Pickett

Packers vs. Bears – Game Day First Impressions, Unfiltered: GB 35 CHI 21

Green Bay Packer Jordy Nelson against the Chicago BearsGreen Bay Packers vs. Chicago Bears:

Here is my unfiltered game day blog post of comments, observations and first impressions.

The Packers “welcome” the Bears to Lambeau Field on Christmas Day with visions of NFC overall first seed dancing in their heads. The Packers are hurting in the trenches on both sides of the ball, but still hope to dominate the Bears, who have lost four straight since losing Jay Cutler. The Packers’ offense will be looking to recapture it’s Rhythm with a re-arranged offensive line. TJ Lang moves to right tackle for Bryan Bulaga an Evan Dietrich-Smith takes over lang’s usual left guard spot. If the offensive line can give Aaron Rodgers some decent  protection, he should be able to shred the Bears’ weak secondary.

Inactive for the Packers today are:

Graham Harrell, Davon House, Frank Zombo, Bryan Bulaga, Chad Clifton, Ryan Pickett and Greg Jennings.

Packers are in much better shape at the running back position, as James Starks and Brando Saine return to give the Packers their full compliment of four running backs

Davon House, after a surprise appearance on the active list last week, returns to his usual spot on the sidelines in street clothes.
