Packer News 10/15/10 – 10/21/10

AL: Hang on Packer fans, the Cavalry is coming. Al Harris, Atari Bigby and James Starks are all unleashed PUPS this week, ready to frolic and play on the green grass of Lambeau Field. While Starks is unlikely to offer any immediate help, Harris and Bigby are both eager to get on the field, with Harris having the better chance of contributing on Sunday.

Holly: Not only are the PUPS available to play, the Packers will be getting of few of the 22 players on their official injury report back on Sunday. Clay Matthews, Ryan Pickett Mark Tauscher and Brandon Chillar all practiced on Wednesday and are expect to play. Nick Collins, Donald Driver and AJ Hawk were held out of practice as a precaution, but figure to be ready for the Vikings. Donald Driver is still a question mark and Mike Neal and Brady Poppinga, have already been ruled out for Sunday Night.

Packer News 10/08/10 – 10/14/10

AL: Last week’s @CheeseheadRadio news was dominated by injury talk, and here were are in the same boat again. No sense rehashing it all for you here, you know the new names, Rodgers, Finley, Matthews, Pickett, Lee & Martin. At this rate, I calculate it would take the Packers only 5 weeks to completely run out of players.  I don’t know if Ted Thompson will be able to keep up.

Holly: Trying to keep up with the Chicago Bears is another concern for the Packers. After an awful Sunday night performance against the NY Giants, the Bears rebounded to easily beat the Carolina Panthers. Missing Jay Cutler, the Bears relied heavily on the legs of Matt Forte and a defense that forced 7 turnovers to win despite a total of only 50 passing yards and four Todd Collins interceptions. The Bears continue to be the luckiest team in the NFL.

Cheesehead Radio News – 10/01/10 – 10/07/10, News From the Packers Twitterverse and Beyond

Al: While the Packers survived a real scare from the Detroit Lions, they weren’t so lucky in the injury department. Promising rookie safety Morgan Burnett was lost for the season with a torn ACL. Originally called a knee sprain, I’ve noticed recently that an initial diagnosis of knee sprain is just coach speak for we’re crossing our fingers and hoping like hell it’s not an ACL. Remember the eagles game, when Leonard Weaver had his knee gruesomely bent backwards by Nick Barnett? Yeah, that was called a knee sprain too.

Holly: Speaking of Barnett, he is also on the Packers injury list with a possible season-ending wrist injury. If it’s determined that Barnett needs surgery now, his season is over. Barnett suffered the injury in the first half last weekend. After getting x-rayed, he returned and finished the game wearing a cast on his right wrist. After the game, Barnett said the x-rays did not show a break. Barnett will be getting a second opinion on Friday. While it doesn’t look good, Barnett said he is hoping he can just “tape it up and play.”

Cheesehead Radio News – 9/24/10 – 9/30/10, News From the Packers Twitterverse and Beyond

Weekly Packers News from Twitter and other Sources by Al Bracco and Jayme Joers. (As heard on Cheesehead Radio 9/30/10 ) Packer News 9/24/10 – 9/30/10

Al: As if the sting of losing to the Bears was not bad enough, the Packers’ Nick Collins had to endure the taunts of an idiot Bears fans after the game. Collins was spit on and taunted with several racial slurs. Normally the laid back, quiet type, Collins reacted by throwing his mouthguard at the fan om his way to the lockerroom. If this were hockey, the entire Packers team would have been in the stands.

Jayme: Well Al, while the Packers team remained on the field, they all stood firmly in their defense of Collins and his reaction to what happened. For his part, Collins apologized for not being the bigger man and just walking away. Teammates Donald Driver, Aaron Rodgers and Daryn Colledge all made comments appealing to fans to remember that the players are human and deserve some respect for what they do. The incident is still under review by the NFL.

Cheesehead Radio News – 9/17/10 – 9/23/10, News From the Packers Twitterverse and Beyond

Weekly Packers News from Twitter and other Sources by Al Bracco and Holly Phelps. (As heard on Cheesehead Radio 9/23/10 ) Packer News 9/17/10 – 9/23/10  “The Bears Still Suck”

AL: Green Bay Packer legend Bart Starr showed everybody this week how it’s done. No, he wasn’t back on the field, but as he always does, he displayed more class in one action that some do in a lifetime. This past week, Bart donated three of his Championship rings to the Green Bay Hall of Fame. Also donated was a necklace from his wife Cheryl with a charm for every championship. The Packers Hall of Fame called it the most significant donation ever received, and it’s only fitting it came from Bart. While other much richer ex-Packer quarterbacks are busy hawking every piece of memorabilia imaginable, Starr remains the epitome of class.

Holly:
A current Packer that has always shown some class is one AJ Hawk. Love him or hate him, as a lot of Packer fans seem to do, Hawk just goes out on the field and does what the Packers ask of him. This last Sunday, he led the Packers with nine tackles and was instrumental in the pressure on Trent Edwards that led to the Chillar interception. While he may be overpaid for a situational linebacker, Hawk has a definite role against the running game on this team and one that the Packers coaches value greatly.

Packer News 9/10/10 – 9/16/10  “We’ll be Fine”

Al: Packer fans were crushed this week with the news of Ryan Grant needing surgery and being placed on injured reserve. When Grant first went down, my immediate thoughts were, “well, now it’s running back by committee. And then I realized, there is no committee this year. When the Packers decided to go with only two true halfbacks this year, I was not thrilled. I said at the time that injuries are just too common at the running back position to only carry 2. Well, my worst fears came true. You can bet the Packers now regret cutting Kregg Lumpkin, who 5 other teams put waiver claims on before he was awarded to Tampa.

Holly: Al, the injury to Grant forced the Packers to make a move of their own, but it wasn’t what many fans were hoping for. As soon as news of the injury hit twitter, the silly trade scenarios started rolling in, many with AJ Hawk being offered as trade bait. You’d think, of course, that Packer fans would know Ted Thompson better than that. There’s been no trade, but the Packers did sign Dimitri Nance off of Atlanta’s practice squad. Nance, an undrafted rookie from Arizona State, will back up Brandon Jackson and John Kuhn, but maybe not this week.

Cheesehead Radio News – 9/2/10 – 9/9/10, News From the Packers Twitterverse and Beyond

Weekly Packers News from Twitter and other Sources by Al Bracco and Holly Phelps. (As heard on Cheesehead Radio 9/9/10 )

Packer News 9/2/10 – 9/9/10

Al: The big news this week, of course, were the cuts made to bring the Packers roster down to 53. Spencer Havner and Will Blackmon were the biggest names let go, which elicited a range of emotions form Packers fans. Many had trouble understanding the Havner move, but not this packer fan. I have said all along the Packers would not risk losing Quarless and Crabtree. It was going to be either Lee or Havner, and the Packers just had more faith in Lee to be a starter if something were to happen to Jermichael Finley.

Holly: That’s not a scenario we ever want to see, Al, but something I think we would all like to see is for Sam Shields to hold his own out there on the field. Especially since all indications are that Shields will be the Packers’ starting nickel cornerback come Sunday. Charles Woodson said as much this week, though Mike McCarthy refused to tip his hand. Shields is doing his part by hitting the playbook extra hard, and enlisting help from Charles Woodson can only help.
