Packers News 10/6/11

Al:   Jordy Nelson was shown a little Packers love this week, as Ted Thompson wrapped up the blossoming wide receiver for another 3 years. Nelson’s contract will be worth 13.2 million over 4 years. Nelson’s comments were fantastic, “I think some people are in this league to get the money, and are excited about it. For myself, I love winning. I don’t know why you would want to leave a team like this, an organization like this.”

Jayme:  Great that he feels that way and it would be hard not to when your quarterback is Aaron Rodgers, who was honored as NFC offensive player of the week for the second time in 4 games.   Rodgers won the award for his record-setting performance, when he became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for 400 yards, throw four touchdown passes and run for two all in the same game.

Packers News 9/15/11

Al:The news coming out of Mike McCarthy’s press conference yesterday was not good. Injured Packers defensive end Mike Neal will be missing more games after undergoing a surgical procedure on Tuesday. Details of the procedure were not released, but Mike McCarthy said the doctors were pleased with how it went. McCarthy would only say Neal will miss “significant weeks,” but he doesn’t think it would be long enough to put Neal on injured reserve.

Jayme: The news was better about Tramon Williams. Thanks to the extra 3 days between games, McCarthy believes Williams’ shoulder could be improved enough for him to play Sunday at Carolina.

McCarthy also said that it wasn’t a requirement Williams be able to practice this week to play in the game. Sounds like Mike really doesn’t want to play the game without him…

Packer News 7/18/11

Al: This past week marked the return of Packers President Mark Murphy to the NFL negotiating table. It also has been full of optimistic news about the potential end to the lockout with the players to vote on Wednesday on a proposed settlement. It could be coincidence, or as CheeseheadTV’s Aaron Nagler suggests, Murphy’s presence might have made a difference.

Holly: Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio attempted this week to put together a list  of things the Packers need to do when football resumes. Unfortunately, the very first one was an epic fail. He listed Howard Green and C.J. Wilson as the candidates to replace Cullen Jenkins – completely ignoring the guy that will surely have the job, Mike Neal. Neal took it in stride on twitter and said he will use it as additional motivation.

Packer News 6/30/11

Al: The ESPY nominations were announced this week, with the Packers garnering 5 nominations. The Packers were nominated for “Best Team”, Mike McCarthy for “Best Head Coach” and Clay Matthews for “Best NFL player. Aaron Rodgers picked up two nominations himself, for “Best NFL Player” and “Best Male Athlete.” The winners will be announced on Wednesday, July 13th.

Jayme: Jay Cutler didn’t receive any love from ESPN, and got just as much from Packers Safety Nick Collins. Appearing on the the Colin Cowherd show on ESPN, Collins named Tom Brady as the toughest QB he’s had to face. Asked for who was the easiest, Collins surprisingly answered the question. “Jay Cutler,” said Collins, “I’ve had my share of success against him and I do get a good read on his throws.” Even in this lockout-marred offseason, the Packers – Bears rivalry flourishes.

Cheesehead Radio News 06-15-11 with Special Guest Daryn Colledge

Weekly Green Bay Packers News from Twitter and other Sources by Al Bracco and Jayme Joers (As heard on Cheesehead Radio 6/15/11 ).

Packer News 6/15/11

Al: Thanks to the NFL lockout, Packers players have had plenty of free time lately. While OTAs and minicamps would normally occupy their days, they’ve been making the rounds at charity events, awards shows and other functions. Other NFL teams have been holding player-led practices, but the Packers don’t see the urgency – something that apparently bothers ESPN’s Teddy Bruschi.

Jayme:    Bruschi went on record questioning the Packers leadership, specifically calling out Aaron Rodgers and Donald Driver for not organizing workouts and extending their Super Bowl celebration for too long. Coach Mike McCarthy addressed the topic and not surprisingly, sided with his players, questioning the value of practices without coaches.

Tom Crabtree: The Fan-Friendly Green Bay Packer

Tom Crabtree’s green mohawk, as posted on Twitter, after getting over 10,000 followers in April 2011.

“He is notable for the large number of tattoos on his arms.”

This is about all the personal information you’ll get when you look up Tom Crabtree on Wikipedia. He’s the tattooed tight end wearing #83 for the Green Bay Packers, and he was born November 4, 1985, in Columbus, Ohio. An undrafted free agent from Miami University, he made his debut with the Packers in his second year, performing mostly as a blocking tight end, yet also managing to accumulate 4 receptions for 61 yards and a touchdown.

These are the cold, hard facts anyone can find out.

But the “plugged-in” cheeseheads know the real @TCrabtree83 as the most fan-friendly Packer to embrace the Age of Social Media.

Just this past week, Crabtree made an impromptu phone call to Bill Johnson and Jason Wilde on their “Green and Gold Today” talk show (which has been suffering from lockout depression). He appeared as a special guest on the latest episode of Cheeshead Radio, co-hosted by our own “Jersey” Al Bracco. And at 8:00 p.m. CDT on June 8th, he will be hosting a live Book Club discussion on CheeseheadTV to discuss Annie Jacobsen’s newest release, “Area 51: An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military Base.”

Packer News 5/18/11 – 5/25/11

Al: Well, there is just soooo much Packers news, I don’t even know where to start. OK, that’s not really true, is it? Thanks to the owners’ lockout, the Packers training facilities must be eerily quiet. No sounds of weights clanging, coaches blowing whistles or fans pleadings for autograph. I’m sure the people of Green Bay, players, coaches and team employees are all a bit confused trying to figure out what to do in the absence of normal football activities.

Jayme:    Speaking of confusion, there was a bit of confusion this week over whether the Packers had cut the salaries of their assistant coaches. In Sunday’s Boston Globe, former Packers writer Greg Bedard wrote that according to the NFL Coaches Association (NFLCA), the Packers had cut their salaries by 20-25%. But then, in a Tuesday Globe article, Bedard wrote that the Director of the NFLCA had called to retract his statements as inaccurate and apologized to Bedard’s readers and to the Packers.
