Packers 13 vs. Giants 27: Game Day First Impressions Unfiltered

Game Notes: What sort of team will the Packers be under Scott Tolzein?  Fans got flashes of potential against the Eagles but also a lot of mental mistakes.  With a week to prepare as a starter, backup quarterbacks typically do about 9% better as the starter, will this be enough to overcome a lost Giants squad that’s finally righted the ship?

Inactives (via Packers.com):

Green Bay PackersGreen Bay Packers
12 QB Aaron Rodgers
13 WR Chris Harper
29 CB Casey Hayward
37 CB Sam Shields
53 LB Nick Perry
55 LB Andy Mulumba
67 T/G Don Barclay

16 QB Scott Tolzien will start for Rodgers; 31 CB Davon House will start for Shields; 96 LB Mike Neal will start for Perry; 74 T Marshall Newhouse will start for Barclay.

New York Giants
9 QB Ryan Nassib
23 CB Corey Webster
44 RB Peyton Hillis
59 LB Allen Bradford
61 C Dallas Reynolds
78 DT Markus Kuhn
81 TE Adrien Robinson

38 CB Trumaine McBride will start for Webster.

1st Quarter

  • Packers kick off, defense gets the first shot.
  • Packers defense looks pretty much the same, a couple good stops followed by a huge gain.
  • The Packers look lost or depressed, two 12-man on the field penalties basically shows they’re not into it right now.
  • Rueben Randle runs a nice mini pick route where the cornerback have to swap responsibilities and scores the touchdown.  You’d like to see tighter coverage by Micah Hyde but overall better offensive play and poor defensive play.
  • Good stop by MD Jennings leads to a 40 yard field goal for the Giants, I think this is the way that the Capers’ defense is supposed to work, give up some yards, but make the stop and force them to take 3 instead of 6.
  • Score: Giants 7, Packers 0

2nd Quarter

  • Out of nowhere, 70 yards of passing on two plays, 25 yards to Jordy Nelson aand 45 yards to James Jones; hopefully this opens up the box for Lacy and Starks.
  • I bet McCarthy is itching to give up on the run, but he knows he has to feed Lacy the ball.
  • Tramon Williams shows why he got that big contract in 2010, what an acrobatic interception.
  • Oh Marshall Newhouse, I thought you were supposed to be good against speed rushers…

All eyes will be on Davis Baktiari, entrusted with protecting Aaron Rodgers’ blind side with Bryan Bulaga lost for the season. Can the fourth round draft pick step right in to a starter’s role as a rookie? First test is tonight.

You never could have convinced me that Giorgio Tavecchio had a snowballs’ chance of unseating Mason Crosby as the Packers placekicker. Until Family Night happened. While I’d still be shocked is Crosby lost this battle, this has actually gotten interesting and might just be a real competition, not the sham I thought it was.

Vince Young is slated to see some time in this game, running I’m sure, a very limited offense. By all accounts, he’s been awful in practice. Should be interesting…

Mike McCarthy Pregame Show on 620 WTMJ:

Ready for another team: You get to this point every year when you are competing against your teammates in the dog days of August…

Game Priorities: From an offensive standpoint, calling plays. I’m basically going to call four different games tonight.

Bulaga: We’re giving David a chance to play left tackle, Marshall Newhouse has experience there, so I have confidence in him at that spot. Don Barclay is also a fine player that we can use at either tackle spot.

Game Notes:

Donald Driver active. OBVIOUSLY, the Facebook campaign helped…

Alex Green inactive. With DuJuan Harris showing he can catch also, he gives the Packers everything Alex Green does, so no reason to have both active.

Kuhn is the only current NFL player to score at least one touchdown in each of the last four postseasons (2009-12).

Mike McCarthy Pregame Show on 620 WTMJ:

Weather/Field: Great day for football. We have a dry surface, that’s all that matters.

Team improvement: I feel our production as a football team reflects that. Special teams has been the most consistent. Defense, I felt like we’ve gotten stronger.  We had to play a lot of young guys early on due to injuries and it’s made us better. Now with Charles and Clay back, I’m pleased with where we are.. Offense, we had to change some things during the season… different from how we started the season.

More of a power team?: We’re definitely more balanced. Started the year more tilted towards the pass.

Vikings game: It seems like a month ago. I felt our defense was outstanding, especially with the challenge of stopping Adrian Peterson. The offense just didn’t finish well in the second half, but otherwise I was pleased.

Kaepernick: Raw physical ability. he can really throw the football on the move is impressive. His ability to run is impressive.

SF offense: Playing the option, any time you’re responsible for a gap, it’s important to play with leverage, not peek in and trust the guy next to you.

Crabtree: Playing excellent. He had some injuries in early years. He’s clearly one of the top guys. Strong hand. Goes up and attacks the football

Adrian Peterson/Frank Gore: Guys that can run it all day long. Frank is an exceptional runner. Best I’ve ever seen at making something out of nothing.

Inactive for Vikings today:  QB Christian Ponder, WR Stephen Burton, OT Troy Kropog, DE George Johnson, DE D’Aundre Reed, LB Tyrone McKenzie, CB Brandon Burton

Game Notes:

It’s come to this: inactive for a home playoff game. Gotta feel bad for Donald Driver…

Vikings throw a  monkey wrench into the Packers defensive game plan – Christian Ponder inactive.

Packers are 2-4 in their last six home playoff games. In all six of those game, the opposing team scored on their first possession.

16 of the last 21 Packers – Vikings games have been decided by seven points or less.

Mike McCarthy Pregame Show on 620 WTMJ:

Ponder: Joe Webb – very athletic QB. Had some time to look at him during the week, even today as it became more apparent he will play.

back-to -back same opponent: In a lot ways, we feel we’ve had 2 weeks to prepare for this game. QB change is an adjustment for our defense.

Stopping AP: Good solid run defense. It’s about us. We’re at home, it’s about the mission we have before us.

Scheme: Run defense is not a one man deal. If you watch our DL line play, they played very well, but it takes a lot more than that. Everybody has to tackle, and they will tonight

Ross: Both Cobb and Ross will get some work in the return game tonight

Offensive Strategy:  We don’t want to be one dimensional. We’re not going to come in here and throw the ball 50 times. That’s not in the best interest of our football team.

Dujuan Harris: He’s going to start tonight as far as getting the first carty and then we’ll see how it goes. it’s all about riding the hot hand.

Special teams coverage: We had one or two individuals who just didn’t do their job properly. I’m confident our play on special teams will be better tonight

Packers vs. Vikings – Game Day First Impressions, Unfiltered: GB 34 MIN 37

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson

Peterson scores an early touchdown and helps Minnesota secure the win but falls 9 yards shy of the single-season rushing record

Green Bay Packers vs. Minnesota Vikings:

I’m taking the reins for Jersey Al in today’s Game Day First Impressions.  Here are my unfitered game day running blog post of comments and observations.

Inactive for Packers today:

WR Randall Cobb, RB James Starks, S Charles Woodson, CB Davon House, LB Terrell Manning, WR Donald Driver, DT Jordan Miller

Inactive for Vikings today:

QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson, WR Stephen Burton, CB Brandon Burton, S Robert Blanton, LB Audie Cole, OL Troy Kropog, DE D’Aundre Reed

Game Notes:

Adrian Peterson needs just 205 rushing yards to eclipse Eric Dickerson’s record of 2,105 yards set in 1984

Packers can clinch the second playoff seed with a victory today.  Can still clinch #2 seed with a loss coupled with a San Francisco loss and a Seattle loss or tie

WR Jordy Nelson (hamstring) returns for the first time since the December 2nd meeting against the Vikings.  DE C.J. Wilson (knee) returns for the first time since late November

Jeremy Ross will assume kick return duties today with Cobb out

Packers can even their all-time record at Metrodome to 15-15 with a win. Have a chance to win three in a row in Minnesota since ’82 – ’85 seasons

Mike McCarthy Pregame Show on 620 WTMJ:

Motivation today with playoff implications looming:  Playing to sweep division which is our goal in training camp.  Thursday’s padded practice was sharp

Game prep:  Big game, crowd will be energetic.  Team must be sharp and focus on finishing every play

Fewer big plays given up on defense vs. last season:  Playing good team defense.  Have to credit young guys

Vikings:  They’re a good team.  Have to study film carefully and be prepared.  They are tough at home.  Run the ball very well

Christian Ponder:  He has total command of the offense.  Went through a phase earlier this year, threw some interceptions.  Have to keep him in favorable down and distance from a defensive perspective

Adrian Peterson:  Huge focus today.  Important to focus on tackling and keep big plays to a minimum

Securing second seed in NFC:  Focusing on winning today and playing well.  Important to get highest seed possible but biggest thing is to play well.  Teams that play well can win most any game

Packers vs. Titans – Game Day First Impressions, Unfiltered: GB 55 TEN 7

Inactive for Packers today:

WR Jordy Nelson, RB James Starks, S Charles Woodson, TE Tom Crabtree, RB Alex Green, DL CJ Wilson, DL Jerel Worthy

Inactive for Titans today:

QB R. Smith, WR K. Wright, CB R. Mouton, LB C. McCarthy, C K. Matthews, T M. Otto, DE S. Solomon

Game Notes:

Ryan Grant gets the start at running back for the Packers today. Who’d a thunk it?

Evan Dietrich Smith starts at center for Jeff Saturday. Saturday’s body just breaking down.

Donald Driver is active for what will probably be his final regular season start Lambeau Field.

Packers are playing for a 2nd seed and a first round playoff bye. They need help from Seattle tonight (how ironic) to beat the 49ers.

Mike McCarthy Pregame Show on 620 WTMJ:

Does clinching the NFC North impact your preparation: It really doesn’t. Today’s win is very important to our football mode. Chance to move up or at least clinch the 3rd seed.

Different from last year?: A totally different mindset. You don’t have to listen to the 0utside voices because there are none. Last year, there was the subconscious of “hey we’re in”.

EDS at center: It was a conversation that started earlier in the week. jeff has been fighting through, giving us everything he ha. A bit of a projection here with EDS.   EDS on a short leash… Jeff Saturday has been a consummate professional.

Rodgers better this year?: Last year was smooth sailing. It’s been a different ride this year. He’s had to be very disciplined and deal with the constant change around him. Has been a great year for him to grow and he’s a rock. he always goes out and gives us his best.

Chris Johnson: You talk about a home run back, he and AP are the two best at taking it to the house when you give them a crease.

Jake Locker: Excellent athlete, can make all the throws. We need to keep him in the pocket.

Titans D: They have to be excited about the way they’re playing the last month. This is going to be a hell of a contest today.  This will be a bigger challenge than I think people think.

Inactive for Packers today:

21 DB Charles Woodson
44 RB James Starks

12 QB Josh McCown
26 CB Tim Jennings
54 LB Brian Urlacher
58 LB Geno Hayes
69 DT Henry Melton
80 WR Earl Bennett
99 DE Shea McClellin

Game Notes:

Clay Matthews returns to the field today, a huge boost for the Packers’ pass rush. Matthews had 3.5 sacks in the first game against the Bears.

Tim Jennings being out for the Bears is as big, if not a bigger loss than Urlacher being out.

With a win today, Green Bay would clinch their second straight NFC North Title.

Mike McCarthy Pregame Show on 620 WTMJ:

Due to some “technical difficulties” WTMJ didn’t have tape of McCarthy’s interview with Wayne Larrivee. But here are some things MM supposedly said.

Matthews will play and they will monitor his progress. Expect him to be a major contributor.

TJ Lang is back at left guard with Don Barclay at right tackle. Josh Sitton will start at RT.

Running game is important but we need to get the perimeter of our offense going  today.

Packers vs. Bears – First Impressions – First Half:

Packers win the toss and defer.

I think more than starting the game on defense, MM love having the ball to start the second half.

If the Bears are planning to run like this, I’d much rather see McMillian at S than MD Jennings.

Packers first drive starts on their 2 yard line.

Again, not one short route for Rodgers to find. Has to hold the ball and take a sack.

Nice work by Brad Jones on the outside staying with Forte down the field one-on-one.
