Packers vs. 49ers – Game Day First Impressions, Unfiltered: GB 20 SF 23

hands_to_faceGreen Bay Packers vs. San Francisco 49ers:  2013 Wild Card Round

Unfiltered game day blog post of comments, observations and first impressions.

GAME NOTES:

This will be the second meeting this season and the fourth in the last 16 months between the clubs. The Packers visited San Francisco in Week 1 this season, a 34-28 win for the 49ers.

Including playoffs, the Packers have won 13 of the last 17 games against the 49ers, but San Francisco has emerged victorious in the last three.

It’s cold at Lambeau Field, with temperatures in the single digits and dropping. It’s possible the temperature will remain at or above zero through most of the game, with the brutal cold arriving later in the evening. Still, wind chills will be in the minus-20 range for most of the game and possibly getting worse.

As per team tradition, the Packers alternated game captains each week during the regular season. The team elects captains for the entire postseason.

Today’s captains for the Packers will be WR Jordy Nelson and QB Aaron Rodgers (offense), S Morgan Burnettand LB A.J. Hawk (defense), and K Mason Crosby and CB Jarrett Bush (special teams).

Inactives for today’s game:

Packers vs. 49ers – First Impressions – First Half:

Hope all the #Packers fans at Lambeau stay warm and BRING THE NOISE!!! #gopackgo

The Eagles’ loss to the Saints last night highlights the problems of poor run defenses. I’m hoping but not confident that the Packers can get back into their earlier season form in that regard.

Three runs to start the game, and a three-and-out. Message sent, but at what cost?

Sam Shields down… Not a good sign for the Packers.

Two fumbles so far, one by each team. Could see more of this with the weather, but who will take advantage of it?

It’s going to be a long day for the secondary, as Crabtree is wide open for the 4th down conversion.

Green Bay Packers vs. San Francisco 49ers:  2013 Game 1

Unfiltered game day blog post of comments, observations and first impressions.

GAME NOTES:

All eyes (or at least these) will be on the Packers offensive line. Can they keep the 49ers away from Aaron Rodgers or create some running lanes for Eddie Lacy? They are my key to the game on the field.

Off the field, Mike McCarthy has to show he and his coordinators can hang with Harbaugh and his guys. MM had his lunch absolutely handed to him by Harbaugh twice last season. Let’s see what you have, Mike.

Of the two players listed as “questionable,” Morgan Burnett is out and Brad Jones is in. Would gladly reverse those two…

Inactives for today:

42 S Morgan Burnett
51 LB Nate Palmer
58 LB Sam Barrington

With Burnett out, 22 S Jerron McMillian and 43 S M.D. Jennings will be the two starting safeties.

Mike McCarthy Pregame Show on 620 WTMJ:

Camp: I feel like we were able to get through a lot of different concepts and packages.

Happy with young players: It’s about a football game, about the 46 we’re going to dress, it’s going to be emotional and chippy, we have to stay above that stuff.

How long to have a fee of your team: If you have the same group lining up every game, you know by the first quarter of the season who you are.

injutries: Morgan unfortuante thing that popped up late in the week, casey, Dr,. McKenzie hasn’t givenb us a timetable.

MD and McMillian – they’ve played a bunch in the preseason. Morgan has been our quarterback back there so they have to step up.

young players on OL: Well, I’m extrenmely confortable witrh them – they’re all starting today.

CK & read/optin: Colin is one of the young studs at the QB position. he can make the throws to every quadrant and of course, we’re aware of his mobility . Read/option will frankly be a non-issue today.

My unfitered game day running blog post of comments, observations and first impressions.

Inactive for Packers today:  WR Jarrett Boykin; DE Jerel Worthy, CB Davon House; LB Frank Zombo; DT Jordan Miller; TE DJ Williams, RB Alex Green

Inactive for 49ers today:  K Billy Cundiff, RB Jewel Hampton, DT Tony Jerod-Eddie G Joe Looney, S Trenton Robinson, QB Scott Tolzien, DT Ian Williams

Game Notes:

Donald Driver active. OBVIOUSLY, the Facebook campaign helped…

Alex Green inactive. With DuJuan Harris showing he can catch also, he gives the Packers everything Alex Green does, so no reason to have both active.

Kuhn is the only current NFL player to score at least one touchdown in each of the last four postseasons (2009-12).

Mike McCarthy Pregame Show on 620 WTMJ:

Weather/Field: Great day for football. We have a dry surface, that’s all that matters.

Team improvement: I feel our production as a football team reflects that. Special teams has been the most consistent. Defense, I felt like we’ve gotten stronger.  We had to play a lot of young guys early on due to injuries and it’s made us better. Now with Charles and Clay back, I’m pleased with where we are.. Offense, we had to change some things during the season… different from how we started the season.

More of a power team?: We’re definitely more balanced. Started the year more tilted towards the pass.

Vikings game: It seems like a month ago. I felt our defense was outstanding, especially with the challenge of stopping Adrian Peterson. The offense just didn’t finish well in the second half, but otherwise I was pleased.

Kaepernick: Raw physical ability. he can really throw the football on the move is impressive. His ability to run is impressive.

SF offense: Playing the option, any time you’re responsible for a gap, it’s important to play with leverage, not peek in and trust the guy next to you.

Crabtree: Playing excellent. He had some injuries in early years. He’s clearly one of the top guys. Strong hand. Goes up and attacks the football

Adrian Peterson/Frank Gore: Guys that can run it all day long. Frank is an exceptional runner. Best I’ve ever seen at making something out of nothing.

Mike McCarthy Pregame Show on 620 WTMJ:

Starters:

Opening day: It’s very special – just to be able to hear the drums outside sitting in your office, looking forward to that lambeau atmosphere. We’re excited to get started

Do you have a special team? Well, you definitely think you do. I go back to an old Ron Wolfism – the bad teams don’t even know they’re bad at the beginning of the year. We have a very difficult matchup, but we’re excited to go for this victory and grow as a team

Successful camp?: Very much so. Look at our roster, our players went through a thorough and rough camp, as far as what we were able to achieve and install. I feel we’re very well prepared.

Unscouted looks: The flow of the game dictates that. I’m not obsessed with the first 15 plays, as has been the case with this offense. – I let the game take me where it takes me.

SF: Very good football team. Playing them the prior 2 years, a team that always has a number iof talented playetrs. It will be interesting to see which way their offense goes with ther new additions, but surely their defense is what they hang their hat on.

Willis & Bowman: It’s a defense with a number of playmakers, a very stout front. It will be a challenge to run the footbnall, but it’s something we will have to do today.

Alex Smith & new targets: I would expect them to be more diverse. Smith has a litle more playmaking ability than peeople realize. Cerebral and a very good athlete.

SF-GB: There are going to be a lot of good football players on that field today. This game has everything you’re looking for
