2013 Green Bay Packers: An Early Look At The Depth Chart

Green Bay Packers huddle

Who are your 2013 Green Bay Packers?

With the off-season activities now officially over with, we now turn our attention to the upcoming training camp and preseason.  The big question is:  What will the 2013 Green Bay Packers look like?

I’m taking a look at each position and listing who I think are the likely starters, as of today.  Training camp always tends to change that list quite a bit so this is obviously as of today, as it stands, and without having really seen many of these guys play.

Quarterback

Starter:  Aaron Rodgers

Backup: BJ Coleman

Bubble: Graham Harrell, Matt Brown

Quick hits: Rodgers is the league’s highest-paid player and let’s not forget he’s pretty good at what he does.  No question there and so the biggest debate is whether Coleman can leapfrog Harrell and will the team carry three active quarterbacks?  My thought is that if Coleman wins the backup spot, they will likely cut Harrell.  Illinois State’s Matt Brown could be a good candidate to land on the practice squad, much like Coleman did last season.

Running Back/Fullback

Starter:  DuJuan Harris

Backup:  Alex Green, Eddie Lacy, Johnathan Franklin

Bubble: John Kuhn, James Starks, Angelo Pease, Jonathan Amosa

Quick hits: Harris came on and was effective late in the season for the Packers.  He didn’t participate in much of the team’s offseason due to having a cyst removed near his lung.  He is expected to be ready for training camp.  Green will get every opportunity to remain a part of the team’s plans but will face very fierce competition from rookies Lacy and Franklin.  Still, I see the team keeping all four.  James Starks is likely all but out of Green Bay after being largely ineffective during his three-season stint with the team.  And we may have seen the last of John Kuhn, which will make the team’s decisions at this position easier.

Wide Receiver

Starters: Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Randall Cobb

Backups:  Jarrett Boykin, Charles Johnson

Bubble:  Jeremy Ross, Kevin Dorsey, Alex Gillett, Terrell Sinkfield, Myles White, Tyrone Walker, Sederrick Cunningham

A Way-Too-Early Packers 53-man Roster and Depth Chart Prediction

Here’s my way-too-early Packers 53-man roster prediction and depth chart. It’s presented without comment because I’d rather see what all of you have to say about it in the comments section.

(And spare the “it’s way too early to be talking about this” comments). I know it’s way too early. Hence the title. In my opinion, this topic is much better than rehashing the same old stories that come out of OTAs every year.)

A Few Surprises as Packers Go Deep With Their Depth Chart

Andrew Quarless

Andrew Quarless

Four days prior to the Green Bay Packers’ first preseason game, the team released their first unofficial depth chart of the 2011 season. The Packers are scheduled to play the Browns on Saturday night in Cleveland.

While the first depth chart is certainly a great starting point for conversation, it’s too early to attach too much importance to it..

The Packers have been in training camp for less than two full weeks and have yet to play a preseason game, so this initial depth chart is subject to plenty of changes. Throughout the course of four preseason games and the practices in-between, the depth chart will almost certainly fluctuate. Don’t expect it to look the same come Sept. 8.

Below is the unofficial depth chart, courtesy of Packers.com. Any interesting notes are listed below the position, and anything listed as “OTHER” is under third string and not in any particular order.

OFFENSIVE DEPTH CHART

QB: Aaron Rodgers, Matt Flynn, Graham Harrell

RB: Ryan Grant, James Starks, Dimitri Nance, OTHER: Alex Green, Brandon Saine

Vic Ketchman said today in his mailbag that Alex Green might be creeping his way into the running back battle. So, to see him as at fourth string behind Dimitri Nance is somewhat surprising. As we will learn, rookies have a lot to prove.

FB: John Kuhn, Quinn Johnson, Jon Hoese

WR: Greg Jennings, James Jones, Randall Cobb OTHER: Brett Swain, Diondre Borel, Kerry Taylor

WR: Donald Driver, Jordy Nelson, Chastin West OTHER: Tori Gurley, Antonio Robinson, Shaky Smithson

Contrary to popular belief, Donald Driver is still slated to be one of the Packers starting wide receivers. Chastin West has had a good camp thus far.

TE: Jermichael Finley, Andrew Quarless, Tom Crabtree OTHER: D.J. Williams, Ryan Taylor, Spencer Havner

Possibly the biggest surprise of the depth chart is the appearance of Andrew Quarless at No. 2 tight end. He’s battled a bad hip and just recently started practicing, while rookies D.J. Williams and Ryan Taylor have been impressive in Quarless’s absence.

LT: Chad Clifton, Marshall Newhouse, Theo Sherman

LG: Derek Sherrod, T.J. Lang, Adrian Battles

Derek Sherrod started training camp working with the ones at left guard, and the unofficial depth chart shows just that. However, this positional battle is far from over. T.J. Lang won’t go down without a fight.
